We, the undersigned, protest the user-pay approach that the BC Ferry Corporation uses to justify the continuing hike in ferry fares. Island communities are being discriminated against based solely on where we call home. Coastal island communities have contributed nearly 30 billion dollars in federal and provincial taxes since 2001 helping to maintain provincial transportation systems. We find it fundamentally unfair that we are asked to contribute to, for example, the Sea-to-Sky Highway and then be expected to shoulder the costs of our own transportation. With over 14 interior ferry routes operating without fares at all, we demand fair and equitable treatment.

Brent is volunteering for the Gabriola Players, and will be assisting with the hair for their theatre production of the Odd Couple (female version). Hope to see you there!

The Odd Couple (female version)
by Neil Simon

Originally, ‘The Odd Couple’ was written by Neil Simon in 1965 and became a hugely successful Broadway play, but has since been revised as a Hollywood movie, a television series, as well as other spin-offs featuring one or more of the same cast of actors.

In the 1985 female version of ‘The Odd Couple,’ neat freak Felix Ungar (played by Jack Lemmon) and his easy-going and slovenly friend Oscar Madison (Walter Matthau), have been replaced by New Yorkers Florence Unger and Olive Madison (Jenn Feenan and Jean Wyenberg).

The mismatched pair, together with their circle of long-time girlfriends, enjoy weekly get-togethers for gossip and a game of Trivial Pursuit, typically with uproarious results.

Of course, there has to be a love interest, provided by Olive’s upstairs neighbours, the Spanish brothers Manolo and Jesus Costazuela, comically played by Paul O’Sullivan and Steve O’Neill.

Mark the performance dates in your diary because this is a side-splitting comedy you won’t want to miss.

My 2.5 year old son and I moved to Gabriola in 2005. I was fleeing an abusive marriage and all I had to my name was 4 cardboard boxes of clothes and important documents. I was on government income assistance for a few months while I found my footing, and it just wasn’t enough to make ends meet. Did you know a single mom of one receives less than $300 for all expenses, plus a $500 housing allowance? You are expected to pay for everything – diapers, clothes, food, utilities, insurance, and more – with less than three hundred dollars. There just isn’t enough to go around! My ex-husband was unemployed and living in the states, so I was receiving no child support from him. My family helped as much as they could, but out of true need, I turned to People for a Healthy Community (PHC) on Gabriola for food each week. I was utterly astounded and humbled by the love and generosity of every volunteer I encountered.

The following year I moved to Nanaimo, found a decent paying job, and my financial situation stabilized, but I never forgot the kind hearts at PHC. In 2008 we had the opportunity to move back to Gabriola and my husband Brent and I opened Brent G Hair & Spa. One of the things that was most important to us was giving back to the community that blessed us so generously.

Monday, December 6th, Brent G Hair & Spa will be hosting a PHC Day. All cash proceeds from this one day, including all same-day hair services, spa services, and salon products, will be donated to PHC. Prices and services are listed on our website at www.brentghairandspa.com.

As winter and the holiday season approaches, needs on Gabriola increase, so we invite you to visit the salon on PHC Day at Madrona Marketplace, 510 North Road from 10 AM to 6 PM.
